July 2014.For the Internal Medicine Homeless Shelter Assignment, residents are divided into 5 teams (led by a faculty member) and visit one of three shelters during their one-week-per-block of ambulatory clinic duties, which results in a visit to a shelter about once every five weeks. Their duties include health screening and referrals for follow-up care, if needed, as well as health education presentations on topics selected jointly by the resident team and shelter staff. In addition, residents must complete other assignments throughout each year, including an end-of-year survey and an end-of-year reflective writing assignment.
